How many people does it take to change a light bulb?

The idea itself is repulsive to many. Everything from changing jobs to changing brands of cereal can be a source of fear and frustration!

But one of the reasons Jesus came to earth, was to bring CHANGE. Significant spiritual transformations like…

  • Moving us from the bondage of sin to freedom
  • Transferring us from darkness to light
  • Relocating us from the kingdom of satan to the Kingdom of God
  • Transporting us from dead in sin to alive in Christ
  • Releasing us from wrath to be children of God

God designed the above changes. He also initiates them, provides the power to make them happen and He supplies the encouragement and strength to assure they are maintained. That’s what Philippians 1:6 is teaching us… “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

And those supernatural changes show up in how we live out each day. We are new people! We are different! We are revamped! Not what we used to be, doing what we used to do… but becoming what we thought we never could be, doing what we thought we never could do.

  • It forces us to rethink what’s important in life
  • It impacts how we treat our spouse
  • It reshapes what we do with our money
  • It changes our language
  • It alters how we use our time
  • It reduces our tendency to worry
  • It quiets our heart when trouble appears
  • It empowers us to handle conflict appropriately
Colossians 3:5-8,  (NIV)
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

The lyrics from “Why,” a song by Big Daddy Weave

"A transformation that happens over time, is the product of a renewed mind
Create in me a clean heart, place Your spirit deep inside
Capture every thought ‘Til there’s no place left to hide

Why do I do all the things that I do, when I want to do what is right
Change my heart renew my mind, let me walk with you in the new life"

“Here’s a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners” The Message Paraphrase, I Timothy 1:15

A rather crude way of communicating the truth of I Tim. 1:15 is to say, “HE CAME to give LIFE to dead people!"

The unpopular reality is that every human ever born is spiritually dead. Separated from God. We have:

  • No capability to rely on God
  • No way to draw on the power of God (John 15:5)
  • No ability to communicate intimately with God (I Pet. 3:12)
  • No capacity to please God (Romans 8:7,8)
  • No means to even understand the things of God (I Cor. 2:14)
  • No possibility of spending eternity with God (Rom 6:23)

Not a pretty picture!

But Jesus came to change all of that. He came to make a way for every spiritually dead person (that would be all of us) to be made alive.

It won’t happen any other way. Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6)

Through out time, people have attempted to acquire “spiritual life”

  • By living a “good life”
  • By religious acts (confirmation, baptism, etc
  • By acts of kindness toward others
  • By church attendance
  • By keeping dozens of man made rules

But none of these work!

Spiritual life doesn’t come by us attempting to reach God… it comes by God reaching down to us which is precisely what He did when Jesus came to earth. After living His life perfectly, He went to the cross where He died. By dying, Jesus paid the penalty for our sin and by inviting Him into our lives as Savior, “even while we were dead God MADE US ALIVE with Christ and forgave all our sins (Col 2:13)

Spiritual LIFE… which includes ETERNAL LIFE… is a gift to any of us “dead humans” who receive Christ. (John 1:12) and when we receive Christ…

  • We are invited to rely on God (Psa. 37:5)
  • We are able to experience God’s power (Eph 1:19)
  • We communicate intimately with God (Jn 10:27, 28)
  • We can even please God (Heb. 13:15, 16, 21)
  • We are capable of understanding the things of God (II Cor. 2:12)
  • We will spend eternity (life forever) with God (Jn 5:11,12)

“By believing you have LIFE in His name” John 20:31

HE CAME to give us LIFE!

Do you have it?

Christmas Reflections: He Came

For the next four weeks, the church around the world celebrates “advent” which is defined as the arrival of a notable person, thing or event.  It’s taken from the latin word “adventus” which means “coming.” Safe to say, that the “coming” of Jesus to earth was the arrival of a notable person! Certainly worth our attention.

To examine how Jesus came (a baby boy born of a virgin), when Jesus came (December 25th?), and the where Jesus came (Bethlehem) are all fascinating studies, but for the next four weeks our Wellspring devotional will address the question “WHY?” WHY did Jesus come to earth?

  • In His 30 plus years of life on this planet, Jesus did amazing things!

  • He gave life to people who had died

  • He brought sight to those who were blind

  • He restored those who were sick to good health

  • He granted forgiveness to the guilty He fed thousands with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread

  • He calmed a raging sea with words Walked on water

  • Cast out demons  and so much more.

But that’s just some of what He did!

As incredible as these actions were and as impressed as some might have been… these were only a means to a much greater end.

WHY did He do these things? That’s the penetrating question. One of the answers is John 10:10. From the lips of Jesus Himself, “I am come that they may have life in abundance.”Jesus isn’t talking about financial wealth, freedom from health issues, perfection in human relationships… He is talking about HIMSELF! He came to give HIMSELF, because HE IS LIFE! Through HIM we have a relationship with the God of the universe… In HIM we have intimacy with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords… in Jesus Christ we have a reason to live and a purpose to life… In HIM there is abundance, superior quality, advantage and “over and above” to life.

In this week of advent…

  • Allow HIM to be the center of attention every day

  • Consult HIM in every decision you make

  • Acknowledge HIM in every activity you enjoy

  • Welcome HIM to all family events

  • Invite HIM into every conversation

  • Include HIM in every meeting you attend

  • Listen to HIM throughout your day

  • Contemplate Him in moments of despair

  • Rest in HIM

“For it is by HIM that we have life and we move and exist…” (Acts 17:28)

That’s WHY He came!
